So we are on our 26th day of ECQ and we are running out of ideas on how to keep this little boy busy. Good thing Ate Cel thought of a great idea! Paper Mache!
You can make a lot of wonderful art projects with paper mache: masks, a surprise egg, pencil holders, and in our case, a ROBOT!
Things you need:
- Old boxes
- tape
- scissors
- scratch paper
- glue (recipe below)
- coloring materials/paint
First, we made a molded figure using old paper boxes we got from supermarkets. This will serve as the base mold for our paper mache robot.
Next, we make the paper mache!
So here's how to make paper mache glue from water and cornstarch so they can get their hands messy.
What you need
cornstarch
water
mixing bowl
spoon
Procedure:
Mix 1 cup cornstarch and 1/2 cup water until you get a thick glue-like consistency
Add a bit more water if it's too thick.
Mix well with a spoon to get rid of all the lumps
Add a few tablespoons of salt to the final mixture to help prevent mold formation. Now, we can make our robot!
Remember:
use strips of newspaper, scratch paper, or even paper tissues or towels.
Let the paper strips soak in the paper mache glue a little before using.
Cover your artwork with only 2-3 layers, then let dry completely. This is an important step. DO NOT move on until it is completely dry.
Once a layer is dry you can add 2-3 more layers, remembering to let each layer dry before adding the next one.
The final layer can be plain paper - so it's easier to paint - but use the thinnest paper possible and make sure it's soaked well in the paper mache glue.
Since we had some white paint left at home for our home renovation, we decided to paint it all white so it will be easier for us to draw and paint on it.
We are still finishing up the robot so we will post finished product soon!
I like how the robot on the left has 3 columns of abs haha!
